A Festive Catchup

A festive catchup

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I can't believe it's 2018! I started 2017 only half way through my year abroad living in Germany and it has definitely been a bit of a roller coaster year. The end of the year got a little crazy. I had an interview down in London two days before my end of semester exams which would have been stressful enough if I hadn't badly sprained my ankle the week before at a netball game. I was on crutches for about a week and it's still not 100% better although it's getting there. With all the travelling and ankle drama I had to somehow squeeze in some revision and exams, which actually didn't go too badly, so now I just have a nervous month wait before I get my results.

To top it all off, my phone (which has been on its last legs since the "Strong Beer Festival" in Munich way back in March, so it did pretty well all things considered) finally died and I have acquired a lovely purple block that used to belong to my mum, which is quite literally bigger than my hand. Whilst I am eternally grateful not to have to shell out for a new phone after a spendy December, not having my iPhone hasn't really been helpful for maintaining my blog. Photographs are my biggest issue, it takes me days to take and edit the photos on my phone because it's just not something that comes naturally. Buildings and landscapes yes, flatlays not quite so much. So whilst I have plenty of ideas for content to write about, finding the photographs to match the words will be bit of a challenge. This does mean that I am considering ways to make photography less of a focus in my posts and putting a bit more emphasis on the words themselves, but that's a 2018 project I'll talk about in a post soon.

At the start of December I wrote myself a festive bucket list, so I thought I would go back over it and see what things I managed to do and which ones I might need to save till next year.

Visit the Edinburgh Christmas Market - This one probably would have been possible had it not been for the sprained ankle, so next year I am determined to go and finally go to the ice skating rink that has been my dream date since I was about 14. I have since given up on the idea of going on a date, and will instead settle for anyone that wants to come or will just date myself.

Make my own mulled wine - I did this one!! When I was down in London I made mulled wine with W and it was so tasty. We drank it whilst watching Arthur Christmas, which is so much funnier than I remembered from watching it the first time. Definitely a new festive movie favourite!

Attend a Carol Service - Another failure. Although I am not classing this one as a failure because the night I was supposed to go to a carol concert I played a game of Monopoly and won soooo I'd say it was a worthwhile sacrifice....

Buy a new Christmas jumper - For this I turned to Boohoo. I don't know why, but this year was exceptionally difficult to find a Christmas jumper without some sort of creepy saying. I'm looking at you ASOS and "Let's Make Out". Subtle.

Send Christmas cards - I bought them.......

Decorate my flat - This one is my favourite. My flatmate and I went all out and bought ourselves a little tree (a real one...) and decorated it with lights and baubles. It definitely made being housebound a lot more enjoyable and I wish we never had to take it down.

Winter Wonderland - Again, would have been possible if I hadn't had the ankle drama and there wasn't a snowstorm in London the weekend I was down...

Wrapping presents - One of my favourite parts of the festive season is wrapping presents. I did all of my own and most of our family presents this year whilst watching A Christmas Prince on netflix which was potentially the best thing I watched all year. Haters gonna hate but that movie was great and I watched it twice and I have not a single regret.

Go to the Theatre - Another one I didn't manage. One minute it was the first of December and we were putting the tree up and the next I was sitting in the exam hall. December went so bloody fast and I would really have liked an extra week. However it's another one to add to next year's list.

I have lots of content ideas reflecting on 2017 and looking ahead to 2018 which will hopefully be going up over the next couple of weeks. I've come back to St. Andrews to get some headspace, hopefully be productive and get myself organised for the semester and I'm excited to start sorting everything out again as the past two weeks have been a literal blur of movies, chocolate and pigs in blankets. Pretty perfect way to spend the holidays but now it's time to get organised. Hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are starting the new year off in a positive and happy way! Thank you to everyone who read and commented on my posts in 2017 and I hope you continue to enjoy them throughout 2018 <3

  1. Happy New Year!

I love the theatre, I admit though it's been a while since I've been as well. December went so fast this year didn't it!

Such a shame to hear you weren't able to make it to London's Winter Wonderland (hope the ankle is better!) The snow was awful this year, thank god it's gone now though!
